Meeting Minutes @GLOBECOM 2014
CNOM Meeting at Austin, December 9, 2014
Meeting slides
Starting time: 14.10 hours – after awaiting more attendance
Attendees:
Aldri Santos, Michele Nogueira, Doug Zuckerman, Bridget Erlikh, Linda
Dadjo, Pascal Lorenz, Burkhard Stiller (chair)
Minutes taken by Michele.
– CNOM recertification report
* Collaborations with TC
o Suggestions: try collaboration even with other ComSoc TCs such as
security, ad hoc and sensor networks
o Collaborations can be understood as organizing special sessions
together with other TCs, special editions on journals from the
specific TCs
o It needs to be determined more precisely what “collaboration”
between TCs will or have to mean, technical overlaps are needed
to be defined, and possible “representatives” from each TC can
be delegated to the other TCs, too
o CNOM is asked to determine “strategic” domains in which such a
collaboration shall be foreseen and in which it can generate the
largest impact (in terms of which measurements to be defined)
– Distinguished lecturer (DL)
* CNOM officers are asked to send an email to attendees determining
the requirements, restrictions in order to determine DLs
* CNOM officers shall motivate people of the community to offer
their expertise and who are willing to apply
* CNOM officer could provide directions about the DL’s content,
which has to be related to CNOM in terms of expertise, strategic
CNOM plans.
– IEEE fellows from CNOM
* Distinguished lectures could promote such a nomination
* CNOM officers to lobby with the IEEE Fellow Selection Committee
* CNOM officers to argue with ComSoc president to see CNOM expertise
being reflected in next IEEE Fellow Selection Committee
* Joint agreement of people in the room on the need to have more
CNOM expertise in IEEE Fellows for the near future
* Involve other experts to promote talking with them and motivating
nominations
o It is necessary to know about the clear set of criteria employed
to evaluate nominations
o Attract “wireless” experts, who run management tasks in many
pieces of their work, but don’t call it that way, they tend to
even not know about those related management approaches
o E.g., 5G network management is of high value for commercial
operations, practitioners, and operators
– Test of time award
* Well received
* Proposal: the winner of such an award could be asked to present
his/her work again, and add the current views and prospects to it
– Journals
* TNSM: it is recommended to add to those slides the number of
submissions
* ComMag: no comments
* JNSM: no comments
* IJNM: no comments
* The note and plan of EiCs of those journals to reduce the time of
feedback of a review addresses the community and the reviewers, too
– Conferences
* It recommended to include the regional conferences, too
o APNOMS: is it organized every year? When next?
o LANOMS: is it organized every 2 years? Next?
– All other business (AOB)
* “First time attendees” were marked on their badges at GLOBECOM
This is recommended for IM/NOMS, too, including a special event
or session/information being organized at these events, introducing
CNOM, the conference, and relevant community information
o Bridget acknowledged that this type of information is available
for IM/NOMS registrations, ribbons could be used, too
o CNOM officers are asked to communicate those ideas to the
respective conferences’ general chairs for consideration
* A request was made, why operators, ISPs, and commercial interests
in management cannot be dealt by today’s tools, as such the
involvement of industrial perspectives and their demand needs to
be clarified
o The discussion revealed that such problems of “federations” did
exist in the 80s already in the management domain, but they have
not been solved. The term “federation” determines the newer facet
of such cross-border/network-domain needs
o It was suggested to plan for an “Industrial Panel” with GLOBECOM,
or any other CNOM conference, to discuss why until now the
management community could not solve the problem of
interoperability among management tools. A symposium on management
issues could be suggested for the next GLOBECOM instances
Ending time: 15.00 hours
