Minutes of CNOM/IFIP WG 6.6 Joint Meeting @ NOMS 2020

CNOM/IFIP WG6.6 Joint Meeting @NOMS 2020 was held virtually, April 21, 2020. The summary of the meeting is as follows.

  • Filip (CNOM Chair) and Rémi (IFIP WG6.6 Chair) chaired the meeting.
  • Please find attached the presented slides (in pdf format).
  • Filip described the CNOM activities, its current members, and how to get involved. Rémi explained the IFIP, its origins, and activities.
  • Rémi presented an overview of journals and further coming events.
  • Filip provided detailed information of IEEE TNSM.
  • COMMAG:
    • Filip provided detailed information of the IEEE COMMAG Series.
    • Noura and Prosper will be suggested as new Network and Service Management Series editors.
    • Prosper and George discussed about the style of IEEE Communications Magazine papers. George mentioned they should not be a high level or survey proposals or an architecture without any validation and should have some realization behind to support it. Essentially IEEE COMMAG Series papers should have a tutorial text in the first part, while the second part should have the specific contributions to advance the state of the art. George also mentioned that Tarek S. El-Bawab, the new editor-in-chief has plans to change that and will get in touch with the Series Editors.
    • Filip mentioned the need to define strategies to attract high quality COMMAG paper submissions from the community.
    • Marc Olivier mentioned the need to create awareness about the possibility for the authors whom had papers published in TNSM to have another publication in IEEE COMMAG
    • Alexander Clemm suggested to update the CNOM website with information about the style of papers and possibilities of publication.
    • George emphasized that this community should support the magazine and that several of the papers do not come from the community itself.
  • Rémi provided detailed information of JNSM, IJNM, and JSAC.
  • Filip showed the upcoming special issues with open calls.
  • Rolf Stadler reported the status of current JSAC Special Issues and mentioned that have not yet discussed about follow up issues. Filip mentioned there used to be a special issue and a whole series on softwarization, but it has been discontinued, however TNSM has a special issue on this topic.
  • Rémi presented the 2019/2020 Conference Statistics
  • Pal Varga reported his impressions on having NOMS virtually. Mentioned problems with microphone misuse and other small problems. However, overall everything was very good, specially the attendance, with 35~40 people in the rooms, while the keynote had 86 participants. No reported no-shows. Concluded showing a movie demonstrating the 3D room used for poster sessions, which was interesting as it brought an extra flavor for the posters. Marc Olivier liked everything and Prosper congratulated Pal for the efforts.
  • Rémi and Filip presented the future conferences (TMA, Networking, Netsoft, CNSM, IM) and mentioned that some will be held virtually inspired by NOMS 2020. Prosper provided further details of NetSoft 2020.
  • Filip showed a video created by Toufik of the city of Bordeaux to advertise IM 2021.
  • Filip mentioned that CNOM officers can nominate colleagues to serve as symposium chair of ICC/Globecom and encouraged interested colleagues to contact the CNOM officers.
  • Filip reported the CNOM Recertification status, which has been approved by the ComSoc TC Board
  • Marinos explained the updated CNOM Policies & Procedures, available for feedback on the CNOM website until May, 5th 2020 and asked for feedback through mail. After this date, the new CNOM Policies & Procedures will be published online.
  • Carol introduced the CNOM BPA and emphasized that the focus is only on conference papers. A first CNOM BPA will be selected by May, 1st and publicly announced during ICC 2020.
  • Filip showed the IEEE Distinguished Lecturers Program and introduced the IEEE Student Competition. All interested colleagues are encouraged to participate. The CNOM officers are happy to nominate interested colleagues as IEEE Distinguished Lecturer.
  • Carlos provided an overview of the Network and Service Management Taxonomy and mentioned it will be updated again later this year.
  • Filip asked for contributions to organizational tasks in community, for example, young researchers are encouraged to volunteer to help organizing activities. Please feel free to contact the CNOM officers.
  • Marinos reported the TC Newsletter recent initiative. Every 6 months will be a new newsletter.
  • Filip concluded the CNOM meeting.

Meeting Minutes @GLOBECOM 2014

CNOM Meeting at Austin, December 9, 2014
Meeting slides

Starting time: 14.10 hours – after awaiting more attendance

Attendees:
Aldri Santos, Michele Nogueira, Doug Zuckerman, Bridget Erlikh, Linda
Dadjo, Pascal Lorenz, Burkhard Stiller (chair)

Minutes taken by Michele.

– CNOM recertification report
* Collaborations with TC
o Suggestions: try collaboration even with other ComSoc TCs such as
security, ad hoc and sensor networks
o Collaborations can be understood as organizing special sessions
together with other TCs, special editions on journals from the
specific TCs
o It needs to be determined more precisely what “collaboration”
between TCs will or have to mean, technical overlaps are needed
to be defined, and possible “representatives” from each TC can
be delegated to the other TCs, too
o CNOM is asked to determine “strategic” domains in which such a
collaboration shall be foreseen and in which it can generate the
largest impact (in terms of which measurements to be defined)

– Distinguished lecturer (DL)
* CNOM officers are asked to send an email to attendees determining
the requirements, restrictions in order to determine DLs
* CNOM officers shall motivate people of the community to offer
their expertise and who are willing to apply
* CNOM officer could provide directions about the DL’s content,
which has to be related to CNOM in terms of expertise, strategic
CNOM plans.

– IEEE fellows from CNOM
* Distinguished lectures could promote such a nomination
* CNOM officers to lobby with the IEEE Fellow Selection Committee
* CNOM officers to argue with ComSoc president to see CNOM expertise
being reflected in next IEEE Fellow Selection Committee
* Joint agreement of people in the room on the need to have more
CNOM expertise in IEEE Fellows for the near future
* Involve other experts to promote talking with them and motivating
nominations
o It is necessary to know about the clear set of criteria employed
to evaluate nominations
o Attract “wireless” experts, who run management tasks in many
pieces of their work, but don’t call it that way, they tend to
even not know about those related management approaches
o E.g., 5G network management is of high value for commercial
operations, practitioners, and operators

– Test of time award
* Well received
* Proposal: the winner of such an award could be asked to present
his/her work again, and add the current views and prospects to it

– Journals
* TNSM: it is recommended to add to those slides the number of
submissions
* ComMag: no comments
* JNSM: no comments
* IJNM: no comments
* The note and plan of EiCs of those journals to reduce the time of
feedback of a review addresses the community and the reviewers, too

– Conferences
* It recommended to include the regional conferences, too
o APNOMS: is it organized every year? When next?
o LANOMS: is it organized every 2 years? Next?

– All other business (AOB)
* “First time attendees” were marked on their badges at GLOBECOM
This is recommended for IM/NOMS, too, including a special event
or session/information being organized at these events, introducing
CNOM, the conference, and relevant community information
o Bridget acknowledged that this type of information is available
for IM/NOMS registrations, ribbons could be used, too
o CNOM officers are asked to communicate those ideas to the
respective conferences’ general chairs for consideration
* A request was made, why operators, ISPs, and commercial interests
in management cannot be dealt by today’s tools, as such the
involvement of industrial perspectives and their demand needs to
be clarified
o The discussion revealed that such problems of “federations” did
exist in the 80s already in the management domain, but they have
not been solved. The term “federation” determines the newer facet
of such cross-border/network-domain needs
o It was suggested to plan for an “Industrial Panel” with GLOBECOM,
or any other CNOM conference, to discuss why until now the
management community could not solve the problem of
interoperability among management tools. A symposium on management
issues could be suggested for the next GLOBECOM instances

Ending time: 15.00 hours
